Renting a Boat in Formentera Without a License: 2026 Changes

Do you want to rent a boat in Formentera without a license? This changes in 2026

If you are thinking about renting a boat in Formentera during your vacation, there is an important change you should know about.

Starting from October 1, 2026, you will no longer be able to rent certain boats to drive them yourself if you do not have the corresponding nautical certification.

Until now, it was possible to rent small boats up to 5 meters and 15 HP without a license, as long as certain conditions were met, such as sailing during the day and in authorised areas.

This changes with the new regulations.

What does it mean for tourists?

If you don’t have a boating license and want to rent a boat in Formentera, the option will be to hire it with a captain.

In this way, you can continue enjoying a day at sea, visit the most beautiful coves, swim in crystal-clear waters, and discover Formentera from the sea, while the captain takes care of the navigation.

If you already have a nautical qualification, you will be able to rent a vessel that falls within the characteristics permitted by your license.

And if I find “boat without a license in Formentera” on the internet?

Be careful with old ads.

Many rentals that were offered without a license were based on the previous regulations. Before booking, always check the current conditions and whether you need a license for the specific vessel.

Enjoy Formentera from the sea

The change doesn’t mean you have to give up sailing in Formentera. This means that if you don’t have a license, you’ll have to do it with a captain.

And for many visitors it can even be the most comfortable option: you only have to sit back, enjoy the Mediterranean and discover some of the most spectacular corners of the island.

If you are coming to Formentera in 2026 and you want to rent a boat, make your reservation in advance and always check the license requirements.
