Mallorca, Ibiza, and Formentera have been moved up to level 4 of COVID’s health alert because the hospital pressure in these territories is still very high, even though there has been a big drop in the number of people getting sick in these territories.
Iago Negueruela, the spokesman for the government, said this at a press conference after the Consell de Govern. He said that this change doesn’t mean anything new in terms of the measures that were already in place at level 3.
There is still a level 3 health alert for Menorca because “a more contained hospital situation” is kept there, but the number of people getting sick hasn’t just gone down.
At least until February 14, when the situation will be looked at. This classification by levels will stay in place.

Those classified as high risk, on the other hand, may occupy up to a maximum of 40% of the allowed capacity. In addition, the maximum number of people per table will be 6 people indoors and not 10 as before.
17 december – 2020
The president of the Consell de Formentera, Alejandra Ferrer, does not exclude requesting “the passage to a more restrictive level” before the Christmas holidays if the increase in infections continues on the island, as she assured this Wednesday in a statement.
Ferrer has asked the island’s population to take extra precautions against covid-19, following the detection of an outbreak with 11 infections and after the cases have been increasing since the December holiday weekend.
In this line, she has indicated that the 7 active cases that there were until last Tuesday on the island, have increased to 19 after the outbreak with 11 infected people.
Ferrer has called a security meeting, extraordinary and urgent, for today Thursday at 1:00 p.m. in order to coordinate the control and inspection work of the Local Police, the Civil Guard and the emergency service of the Balearic Government.
She has also announced that the Local Police have made a plan to reinforce the control of the premises and public spaces of the island to ensure that the anticovid regulations are met.
The number of cases of people affected by covid-19 in Formentera have increased since December 7, coinciding with the December holiday weekend and the arrival from Spain mainland of students and workers residing on the island.
The data at this time are 19 people infected with covid-19 in Formentera, with follow-up by primary care units.
15 december – 2020
The number of active cases of coronavirus covid-19 has fallen in a month about 60%, exactly 58.7%, since on November 13 there were 598 people with the active virus and as of today it is below 250.
Yesterday, December 14, the Molecular Biology section of the Microbiology laboratory of the Can Misses Hospital confirmed the infection of three people, all of them in Ibiza, so the number of active cases falls again after increasing slightly.
Thus, at this time, the number of confirmed infected patients undergoing follow-up or treatment in Ibiza and Formentera stands at 247. Of which 21 are hospitalized with 4 in the ICU and 226 receive home follow-up by the Primary Care teams, 8 of they are in Formentera.
Good control of the pandemic in Ibiza and Formentera allows restrictions to be relaxed in anticipation of the next Christmas holidays, as agreed by the Inter-territorial Health Council, the curfew is delayed until 1.30 a.m on the days 24 and 31 December. In addition, in Formentera up to ten people can already meet indoors.
10 december – 2020
Formentera had been without new positives for Covid-19 for several days. A wonderful epidemiological situation that led the island to make headlines in the national press as the only Covid-free zone in Spain.
This trend has been truncated, as three new coronavirus positives have been detected in the last 24 hours.
All the cases are mild or asymptomatic and are being monitored by Primary Care, one of them has been hospitalized to ensure adequate isolation.
The Balearic Government’s campaign to detect possible cases of Covid-19 in people arriving from other parts of Spain, offering free PCR test on arrival, specially to students or residents working on the Spain mainland who came to spend the national holidays this past weekend, have managed to detect these cases and be able to react quickly to their correct isolation, which has proved to be a fast and effective measure to contain the spread of the virus.
On the other hand, we highlight that the government of Spain will allow international travelers from risk countries, in addition to a PCR, to also prove a negative diagnosis of active Covid infection with a TMA test performed 72 hours before entry. in the country.
In this way, the resolution that came into force on November 23 is modified, which only allowed to support the negative result with a PCR test. The TMA test is a molecular viral RNA detection technique with equivalent reliability for the detection of SARS-CoV-2.
The new resolution, which will come into force tomorrow, also establishes that children under six years of age will not be required to have to prove a negative result in these diagnostic tests in order to enter Spain.
The Health Control Form that passengers must complete before entering the country, will include a question about whether they have a negative diagnostic test performed within 72 hours prior to arrival in Spain. At any time, the passenger may be asked to accredit the test result.
In addition, the sanitary controls that are already carried out on all international passengers at the entry points are maintained, such as temperature control and visual control.
03 december – 2020
The island of Formentera is free of COVID-19 after the only person infected has healed. As reported this Wednesday by the Ibiza and Formentera Health Area, in the last hours 12 more cases have been confirmed, but all of them on the island of Ibiza.
Therefore, in principle, it is expected that in the next two weeks as long as this zero infection rate is maintained, the island of Formentera will advance to level 0 in the plan of exceptional prevention, containment and coordination measures to deal with the health crisis caused by COVID-19 that started 3 days ago and for which Formentera is currently at level 1.
At level 0 the restrictions are limited to meetings of 30 people outside and 15 inside and there would be no curfew, among others.
We’ll keep you posted on the news in case of effective advance of the island to level 0.
30 november – 2020
Since November 28, the Balearic Islands have a new health alert level system and also a new Plan of exceptional prevention, containment and coordination measures to face the health crisis caused by COVID-19.
This plan orders and details the restrictions that must be applied from now on depending on the level of alert in which each territory is.
The application of the following levels, except in an emergency, will be updated every 2 weeks based on the epidemiological indicators.
Formentera is at level 1, low risk. The restrictions at this level are, among others, the following:
1. Meetings are limited to 20 people outdoors and 10 people indoors.
2. The ban on smoking in public spaces remains in force if the distance of two meters cannot be respected, as well as on the terraces of bars and restaurants, regardless of the distance between tables.
3. The curfew will be in effect from twelve at night to six in the morning.
4. Bars and restaurants: Indoor, 10 people per table. Outdoors 15 people per table. Use of the barcounter in bars and cafeteria until 10 pm. Closing time at 00.00
Options are given to increase the capacity of the establishments, depending on the measurements of carbon dioxide in their interiors. Bars, cafes and restaurants should install a CO2 meter. From then on, and if the concentration levels of this gas are lower than 800 ppm, the occupancy can be increased. Establishments have until December 15 to install carbon dioxide markers.
We will have to wait until December 15 to find out what restrictions will be in effect at Christmas on the islands. That will be the date on which the Balearic Government will review the level of the pandemic situation according to the new health alert level system.
23 november – 2020
Active cases of Covid-19 coronavirus drop below 500 in Ibiza and Formentera
In the last 24 hours no new contagion has been registered in Formentera and two people with mild symptoms have healed, so the balance is seven people confined into their homes.
On the island they are waiting to know if on november 27 the Balearic Government will announce a relaxation of the restrictions in Formentera since the evolution of the pandemic in this second wave is yielding favorable results.
19 november – 2020
The president of the Balearic Government announced yesterday that the restrictions on the islands of Ibiza and Formentera due to the coronavirus pandemic covid-19, will continue until next November 27, as established, despite the improvement in data incidence of the coronavirus in the islands.
Meanwhile, they are studying to relax the current restrictions, to establish a later curfew and modifying the outdoor and indoor capacity of bars and restaurants, among others.
So until november 27, the restrictions remain in force: activities or events of a family or social nature will be limited to groups of a maximum of ten people in closed spaces and twenty people in open-air spaces, except in the case of cohabiting people, where this limitation will not apply. During these types of activities, the minimum interpersonal safety distance between non-cohabitants and the mandatory use of a mask, if applicable, must be respected.
The terraces of establishments that exercise the activity of restaurant or cafeteria bar may open to the public with the limit of seventy-five percent of capacity, as long as it can be ensured that the arrangement of the tables allows the maintenance of the interpersonal safety distance of meter and a half.
As of November 23, “anyone who comes from a country with a high incidence of covid 19, more than 150 positive cases of covid-19 per 100,000 inhabitants, must provide a negative PCR”.
Whoever arrives without PCR, may be sanctioned by the Foreign Health Service and at the same time they will be offered to do an antigen test that will be fully paid for by the Government of Spain ”, he explained.
16 november – 2020
As of today, there are 531 people on the islands who receive home monitoring by Primary Care teams, due to their mild or asymptomatic condition, 527 in Ibiza and only four in Formentera.
There are currently no hospitalized patients from Formentera.
Therefore, the trend continues on this island with regard to the low incidence of the pandemic. Even in the months of July and August, when the island was full of tourists, the situation was always under control with maximums of 8 or 9 people with mild symptoms.
Hopes are pinned on the summer of 2021 to be able to recover part of the significant losses that all sectors of the island have had to face, whose economy is based solely on tourism.
The news of the advances in vaccines helps to regain courage to study better strategies for the next season.
07 november – 2020
The evolution of the pandemic due to covid-19 in Formentera follows the process expected by the authorities and the relaxations adopted by the Balearic Health Ministry for Formentera are extended: open playgrounds and 75% of the capacity in sporting and cultural events.
In Formentera there are only 2 infected, mild or asymptomatic people who remain at home under the control of Primary Care health professionals.
04 november – 2020
The evolution of the pandemic in Formentera is developing in a favorable way as expected given the circumstances of zero tourism in which the island currently lives, therefore the number of infected drops drastically to a single patient under home monitoring due to their situation mild or asymptomatic.
For Formentera, the chaos due to the pandemic and the resulting restrictions have put the economy of this island in jeopardy, based solely on a tourism model.
The good weather that it enjoys throughout the year as well as the proximity to any country in Europe can be favorable points to reactivate the economy as soon as possible, focusing on an improvement in current world conditions next spring and hopefully before Easter, traditionally considered the starting line of the summer season and that next year comes to be in the first week of April.
02 november – 2020
No new cases have been registered in Formentera, so the number of active cases of coronavirus covid-19 in Formentera stands at 3 people convalescing at home, so the island remains with the same figures since last Thursday.
Formentera, despite having the pandemic under control, with a ridiculously low number of infected, must follow the restrictions that apply to all the islands of the Balearic archipelago, so the curfew time is established between 22:00 and 6.00
29 october – 2020
The Molecular Biology section of the Can Misses Microbiology Laboratory detected 49 positives from which 2 in Formentera, as reported by the Ibiza and Formentera Health Area.
The number of active infected by covid 19 rises slightly to 464 cases, 27 more than the previous day as total in the two islands with 422 people receiving follow-up at home by the Primary Care teams, 421 in Ibiza and 1 in Formentera.
If the evolution of the pandemic continues along the same lines on the island of Formentera, the low number of active cases in could relax the new restrictive measures that will soon be announced by the Autonomous Committee for the Management of Infectious Diseases of the Balearic Islands, a decision taken as a result of the increase in cases in the other islands. In any case, everything is pending on the evolution of covid -19 in the Balearic Islands in the next two weeks.
26 october – 2020
The second state of alarm decreed in Spain to face the new wave of the covid-19 pandemic includes a series of measures such as limitations on night mobility or the number of participants in social gatherings. Despite the fact that the current situation in Formentera is more favorable than in Ibiza and the rest of Spain, the island must adapt to the following restriction measures:
1. Curfew.
Restrictions on night mobility between hours 23.00 and 6.00
During that period of time it is forbidden to circulate on the street without duly justified cause. The police control compliance with this measure.
It will last for the next 15 days, until November 9, depending on the situation of the pandemic in the territory of the Balearic Islands, the president of the Balearic Government will decide or not its continuation.
3. Social meetings.
Prohibition of exceeding the maximum of ten people in social gatherings in closed spaces and a maximum of 20 people outdoors.
5. Harbour
At the moment there is no type of control or restriction to enter the island of Formentera. Passengers arriving at the airport or port of Ibiza in transit to Formentera must adapt to the restrictions imposed on entry to the island of Ibiza.
24 october – 2020
Despite the difficulties that Spain is experiencing during this second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, in Formentera the situation is completely opposite. In recent weeks, only one case of coronavirus infection has been diagnosed. For this reason, the Health area committee is expected to announce in the next few days a relaxation of restrictions on the island. Despite this, its spokesperson insisted that the restrictions “will not be lifted abruptly”, but will be gradually abolished so that, if there is no rebound in cases, current limitations will be relaxed while that will be reversed the moment rates rise.
At the moment, there are no plans to close bars and restaurants, although the authorities acknowledge that “all possibilities are on the table” when it comes to “situations that favor the risk of contagion”
19 october – 2020
According to the data update by the Ibiza and Formentera Health Area, the number of active cases of coronavirus in Ibiza and Formentera falls below 500 after a day in which a total of 31 discharges have been reported. The number of new infections is 18. At the moment there are 489 confirmed infected on the islands, all in Ibiza except for two in Formentera. This is 13 cases less than yesterday.
A total of 29 people are hospitalized, one less than yesterday, and two of them are in the ICU.
The rest of the infected receive home follow-up by the Primary Care teams, given their mild or asymptomatic condition.
We want to highlight that the Spanish biotechnology company PharmaMar has announced that its clinical trials with Aplidin (plitidepsin) for the treatment of adult patients with covid-19 who require hospital admission have achieved “positive results”, both in terms of safety and efficacy.
This medicine is made with a species that lives attached to the rocks of the Mediterranean area and that the pharmaceutical company discovered decades ago in the seabed of s’Estany des Peix, in Formentera, and Ibiza to use it for other purposes.
As the company has detailed in a statement, it has shown “a notable reduction in viral load” in patients between days 4 and 7 after starting treatment with Aplidin.
Thus, he assures that the average reduction in viral load on the seventh day was 50%, and reached 70% on the fifteenth day, and that more than 90% of the patients included in the trial had average or high viral loads at the beginning.
In addition, 80.7% of the patients were discharged after 15 days of hospitalization or before, and 38.2% before the eighth day. After 30 days, none of the patients treated with Aplidin had developed symptoms or signs derived from covid-19 infection.
In view of these results, PharmaMar has managed to get the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS) to authorize it to expand the number of patients included in its trials.
4 october – 2020
According to the analysis of the daily evolution of the pandemic, it should be noted that the number of active covid-19 patients continues to decline in Ibiza and Formentera.
In this way, active patients continue to decline, numbering 17 in Formentera. The current restrictions that affect the island of Ibiza do not affect Formentera. Despite the restrictions, they do not affect tourists arriving in Ibiza with Formentera as their final destination. No type of test is required to enter the island. The use of masks in public places is still mandatory, the prohibition of smoking in them is also maintained.
15 Sep – 2020
The number of active cases of coronavirus in the islands of Ibiza and Formentera decreases for the second time since last July 31, as highlighted yesterday by the Ibiza and Formentera Health Area. Thus, there are currently 811 people with a diagnosis of Covid-19, the vast majority of them (753) in a mild or asymptomatic state. 59 of them are admitted to the two hospitals on the island of which 8 in ICU.
Due to the situation in the Balearic Islands, the president of the Balearic Government announced today that at the end of this week new mobility restrictions will be established in the municipalities of Sant Antoni and Ibiza.
On the other hand, the tourism sector is already working for the near future; They are beginning to prepare for the 2021 season with the aim that Ibiza and Formentera are safe destinations.
A request has been made to the Minister of Tourism to implement tests at origin and destination to guarantee safe tourism and in the same way, they agree that it is essential to test the population of the two islands to stop the contagion curve and trying to make the islands COVID-19 free.
Finally, they emphasized the importance of learning to live with COVID-19 since “the vaccine will take time and the future is uncertain” so work must be done to find solutions to prevent what has occurred this summer.
13 Aug – 2020
The Ibiza and Formentera Health Area confirms that all the new cases of COVID-19 are people in a mild or asymptomatic state. 4 of the new infected belong to Formentera.
The number of active cases is 84, of which 83 are mild or asymptomatic, with most being under home monitoring by Primary Care teams.
The increase in cases is closely related to the number of PCRs that are currently being done to detect more positives early.
On the other hand, the Government of Italy reported last night that the COVID-19 PCR test will be mandatory for all travelers arriving from risk countries including Spain throughout its territory, as reported by the newspaper ‘Corriere della Sera’.
The new regulation establishes that “people who wish to enter the national territory and who have stayed or traveled in Spain in the previous 14 days” must present a test with a negative result that has been carried out in the previous 72 hours.
Likewise, travelers must undergo a PCR upon arrival in the country, if possible at the airport, within 48 hours of arrival.

The Health Area of Ibiza and Formentera has registered 17 positives in Ibiza, all with mild symptoms, of which one of them, a migrant arrived on the island, has entered the specialized unit on Covid-19 to ensure proper isolation despite being asymptomatic. The rest of those infected will receive home monitoring by the Primary Care teams.
On the other hand, six patients have been healed in Ibiza and one in Formentera, so this island does not have active positives at this time.
The number of active patients in Ibiza stands at 45, of which 86.6% have mild symptoms and receive home attention. Of the patients admitted, two are no longer positive, three are asymptomatic (migrants) and one remains stable in the Intensive Care Unit of Can Misses due to a motorcycle accident. As for health professionals, after 86 days without registering infections among workers in the Health Area, one has tested positive for coronavirus.
The situation in both islands is under control and life on the islands develops in a fairly normal way, taking into account the restrictions imposed on the use of mandatory masks in urban centers and recommended social distance.

The health area of Ibiza and Formentera has registered, during this weekend, four new infections by coronavirus.
All cases are located on the island of Ibiza where three of them have mild symptoms and will be followed up by the Primary Care teams. Regarding the fourth person who tested positive, this is the motorist who suffered a traffic accident yesterday.
Active patients stand at 17, of which 76.5% are mild or asymptomatic, seven in Ibiza and six in Formentera, all undergoing primary care follow-up. While four people are admitted to the Ibiza hospital. On the other hand, it has been 72 days without infection between health professionals.
We want to highlight that while the UK government advises its citizens against traveling to the Balearic Islands, The World Tourism Organization puts the islands as an example of a safe destination. The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) assures that Ibiza and the Balearic Islands are an example in the application of sanitary protocols and security measures to adapt the tourism industry to the current times, reducing “to the minimum the risk that a tourist will return infected to their country ».
The President of the Balearic Government, Francina Armengol, has pledged to continue fighting to achieve a safe corridor between the Balearic Islands and the United Kingdom and has said about the restrictions imposed that: “The decision of the United Kingdom is not based on sanitary criteria as they have changed their decision in 24 hours “. referring to the fact that initially the trips to the islands were not discouraged by UK government
Johnson’s reactions to the Covid-19 pandemic are striking, The British strategy against the coronavirus has been radically different from that of the rest of European countries from the beginning since it involved keeping many of the establishments open and allowing public meetings with the confidence of developing a collective immunization against the disease while all of Europe was confined.
While visitors to the Balearic and Canary Islands (places with a very low infection rate) must keep a 14-day quarantine, American visitors can move freely throughout the British territory despite actually United States is the country with the highest percentage of accumulated cases.
26 July – 2020
UK government has excluded Spain from the list of safe countries exempt from quarantine by the coronavirus, which means that people traveling from Spain to the UK must isolate themselves fourteen days on British territory, the Ministry of Transport confirmed this Saturday.
A spokesman for the ministry specified that the measure will apply to the entire Spanish territory, including the Balearic and Canary Islands.
The Government of Spain is negotiating with the UK to exclude from the quarantine the Balearic and Canary Islands, two island territories with a much better coronavirus epidemiological situation than the British.
This was explained by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Arancha González Laya. Diplomatic sources expressed their confidence that the two Spanish archipelagos can be excluded from the quarantine decreed by the British Government in the next few hours through an agreement to make a “safe corridor” so that British tourists visit the islands do not have to quarantine when returning to their country.
On the other hand, the tour operator TUI has decided to maintain its flights with the Canary and the Balearic Islands after suspending all other trips to Spanish destinations after the imposition of a 14-day quarantine by the British Government.
As of today, there are 20 Covid-19 patients under treatment in Ibiza and Formentera and there are currently no infected healthcare professionals. From these patients, 5 are admitted to the hospital, the last one is a 25-year-old Italian man has tested positive for coronavirus when admitted to hospital after suffering a traffic accident late this morning. The rest are asymptomatics or have mild symptoms and are followed by the home care units.
With this low incidence of the pandemic on the islands of Ibiza and Formentera, a positive response is expected from the British government.
We want to highlight that those of us who are currently on the islands of Ibiza and Formentera feel safe, life runs smoothly like every summer with the exception of finding the islands with great tranquility, especially due to the closing of clubs. Those with scheduled trips will find a more heavenly atmosphere than ever.
21 July – 2020
Given the avalanche of calls and emails that we are receiving due to the latest news that appeared in the international press about the covid 19 outbreak on the island of Formentera, we want to clarify the following points according to the local press and the competent health authorities: The Ibiza and Formentera Health Area has not detected any more Covid-19 infections related to the outbreak that appeared this weekend among eight workers at a hotel in Formentera.
Health sources specified that “there have been no further infections, for the time being”, so the situation remains the same: five asymptomatic people who are quarantined in their homes, and three people with mild symptoms, under surveillance and treated at home by Primary Care from the Formentera Hospital.
Last weekend, after detecting the first outbreak that affected five workers, the Balearic Covid-19 Coordinating Center tested the more than 90 workers at the establishment, without any positive detected cases at the moment.
The Health Area of Ibiza and Formentera has not recorded any new infected, nor has it registered any in the last 24 hrs, according to the update of the figures offered today. 79% of active patients are mild or asymptomatic and receive home follow-up by the Primary Care teams. There are currently 19 active patients and only 4 remain hospitalized, of which two have not been positive for two weeks, and two, the migrants who have arrived in Formentera, are asymptomatic.
Almost nine patients out of ten have already been discharged, 185 out of 216, and 66 days have passed without infection among healthcare professionals. The figures that are considered in both islands are particularly low, therefore there is no reason to think of a total or partial closure to national and international tourism. It is possible that in the coming days the control measures at airports and ports will be tightened, thus guaranteeing safe access to the two islands.
All those traveling to the islands or with short-term trips can rest easy. The atmosphere and life on the islands is normal. It is recommended to follow the already international standards of safety distance, use of masks in public spaces and frequent hand washing.
17 July – 2020
As reported by the Ibiza and Formentera Health Area, there have been no new infections in the last 24 hours. Therefore, the number of active patients in the islands of Ibiza and Formentera falls to 13, of which 8 (7 in Ibiza and 1 in Formentera), remain under home control with monitoring by the Primary Care teams, while five are still hospitalized. Of these, only two remain positive, the other three patients tested negative seven days ago, in the PCR tests separated by a week.
88% of those infected so far in Ibiza and Formentera have already been discharged. 62 days have passed without infection among health professionals and 85 days without regretting deaths on both islands.
Protect Formentera, for you and for everyone! ‘, Is the slogan of the campaign in which the main application regulations are remembered to prevent the spread of the virus, which are based on “the mandatory use of a mask, the meter and a half of distance between people who do not live together and frequent hand hygiene ».
Regarding the use of a mask, the campaign specifies the main places where there are exceptions to the rule, such as beaches, swimming pools and also outside urban centers or while practicing sport or in situations of consumption of food or drink. In addition, it is highlighted that this rule is not applicable for children under six years of age.
The campaign will be disseminated on advertising media in different towns, but also among all restaurants and hotels, among other establishments.
The president of the Consell and head of Tourism, Alejandra Ferrer, explained that they want to ask visitors to also help them to protect Formentera because the pandemic is still active and a rebound in the island could mean going back to the starting box ».
10 July – 2020
A total of 21 people are infected with coronaviruses in Ibiza, one more than yesterday, as the Balearic Ministry of Health has just detailed in the daily update of the epidemiological data of the virus. This new infected has mild symptoms, so he has not required hospitalization and remains at home, in isolation and with health control and monitoring by health professionals.
Also with mild symptoms are thirteen other people infected while the remaining seven are hospitalized, of which two are asymptomatic but isolated. There have been no other deaths. The number remains at 12, all elderly with previous pathologies.
From Monday 13/7 the use of a mask on public places will be mandatory at all times with a fine of 100 euros for those who do not wear it. The local government has clarified that there will be a first “warning” day to inform the population before starting to fine for this breach.
The Formentera Jazz Festival will be held between August 21 and 23, after it has changed its usual dates in June due to the Covid-19 crisis. It also returns with a more intimate and small format and has all the security measures to comply with health protocols and guarantee the well-being of musicians and assistants, according to the Formentera Council in a statement.
This is the sixth edition of this musical meeting in the jazz world, which offers variety both in terms of gender and international diversity. The festival was born from the hand of Formentera musician Maxwell Moya, who since then has directed the event with the support of the Consell de Formentera. It will have its main stage for the first time in the Sant Ferran square and will also take place in two of the island’s musical venues, Sa Panxa and Blue Bar, and it will also have the privileged location of Chezz Gerdi in es Pujols.
On this occasion the public will be seated, and the capacity will be limited, respecting the rules of social distance and the use of masks and hand hygiene will be maintained at all times to guarantee the general well-being.
28 June – 2020
The Health Area of Ibiza and Formentera reported yesterday that a new infection of coronavirus with mild symptoms has been registered, after two days without positive infections. On the other hand, 41 days have passed without registering infections between health professionals.
Ibiza will receive tourists with a health passport next July, as a pilot test of the tourist health passport project in which the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) collaborates, to which the island’s hotel sector has joined.
The initiative, called Ibiza Safe, aims to reduce the risks of contagion and give an immediate response to possible outbreaks of Covid-19, the hoteliers reported yesterday in a statement.
It is a mobile application, HI + CARD, that stores medical records supported by a “decentralized, synchronized and encrypted” (blockchain) database, based in Europe so that users can travel safely with full control of their data, detailed from the Fehif.
The objective of this application is to become a “true digital health passport” so that travelers can carry and manage their medical data “safely”, since all kinds of certificates and health records can be included, such as vaccines, allergies, chronic diseases, medication, etc.
As a last piece of news we highlight that as of July 6th, the United Kingdom will eliminate the quarantine of tourists from Spain.
16 June – 2020
According to the latest statements by the government of Spain and the Balearic government, the country opens borders to international tourism on June 21st. While Mallorca has become the first Spanish tourist destination to open its doors after the coronavirus crisis, the island received yesterday the first tourists as ‘celebrities’, Ibiza will receive them today.
The fact that for a week the only areas of the country with tourists are going to be Mallorca and Ibiza, therefore Formentera, giving the image of “safe tourist destination”, is an unprecedented advertising campaign, as demonstrated by the presence of numerous German and national media.
All visitors are confident in the Islands’ health system and despite that the situation could seem somewhat surreal, everyone is happy and ready to enjoy their holidays as they have always done. As of today, there are 20 Covid-19 patients under treatment in Ibiza and Formentera and there are currently no infected healthcare professionals (none of these workers have been diagnosed for the last 30 days).
Since the announcement of the opening on 21/6, reservations for private villas in Formentera have increased considerably, so we suggest starting to book your vacation now.
We look forward to assisting you with your Formentera travel planning.
12 June – 2020
As of today, there are 22 Covid-19 patients under treatment in Ibiza and Formentera, of which 15 are hospitalized although not all of them have the active virus but are recovering from the ailments caused by the virus. There are currently no infected healthcare professionals (none of these workers have been diagnosed for the last 25 days).
Formentera hopes to also be able to participate in the Government’s pilot tourism plan
The president expresses her wish that similar actions can be carried out with other markets “very important to Formentera” such as the Italian one.
The president of the Consell de Formentera, Alejandra Ferrer, has trusted that the Island can participate in the Government’s pilot plan to attract German tourism to the Balearic Islands from June 15.
As she reiterated this Wednesday in statements to the media, the pilot plan is “very good news and gives the possibility of carrying out a very important marketing action.”
Said action will take place at a time when the Islands have been “pioneers” in de-escalation, as the president has considered.
With these tests, the Balearic Islands will become the first destination in Spain to open up to the international market in the current crisis. The 10,900 tourists will arrive in stages and represent less than 1% of the visitors that were registered in June 2019 in the Islands. This figure is perfectly controllable, “said the president of the Balearic islands.
Tourists from anywhere in Germany can travel to the Balearic Islands. They will not have to pass the 14-day quarantine that currently applies to other international travelers, and they can stay in both tourist establishments and second homes.
The tourism plan does not contemplate carrying out previous tests in Germany, but the health checks will consist of a public health questionnaire on board the plane and a temperature measurement using thermal imaging cameras upon arrival at the airport. In case symptoms compatible with COVID-19 were detected in the questionnaire, a clinical interview will be carried out ‘in situ’ by a health professional, and if it is concluded with a suspicion of coronavirus, measures will be taken.
“Upon landing, travelers will receive a text message with relevant health information, such as emergency contact numbers and measures to observe. They will also be given information brochures. Tourists who wish to visit the Islands must provide contact numbers and inform where they are going to stay, since during the stay there will be a telephone follow-up to control the appearance of possible symptoms, “said the Minister.
Thus, if a tourist shows symptoms of coronavirus during their stay, a protocol will be activated by which the public health services will perform a PCR test. The tourist will have to wait for four hours in their accommodation for the result. If it were positive, he would be transferred to an alternative accommodation confirmed by the Govern. Likewise, a trace of the contacts would be carried out to rule out more cases.
This pilot plan will confirm that the Balearic Islands are a safe tourist destination from a health point of view and that the time has come to open to the tourism. The objective is for the tourist flow to increase from July to the end of October.

On the other hand, the Balearic Government will reinforce the sanitary controls in the ports and airports of the Islands starting this Monday, May 11, coinciding with the entry of Ibiza in phase 1 of the opening.
As reported by the Ministry of Health, the measure has been taken to prevent the transmission of COVID-19 and in anticipation of the progressive increase in traffic that will occur as the opening phases progress. Controls will be mandatory and the main novelty will be the taking of body temperature of passengers and crews of ships and aircraft. This test will be done on arrival at all the ports and airports of the Balearic Islands, on all air and sea connections.
Currently there is no prohibition for the arrival of flights to Spain, beyond the one decided for those from Italy. In its statement, Lufthansa points out that they have had to program in the interest of their clients to fly to destinations such as Mallorca and thanks to the fact that Germany has gradually begun to lift the restrictions due to the health crisis.
8 May – 2020
We continue with good forecasts on the evolution of the pandemic on the islands of Ibiza and Formentera with the 73.6%, that is, practically three out of four confirmed coronavirus patients on the islands of Ibiza and Formentera have already been healed, according to the latest pandemic data provided by the Ibiza and Formentera Health Area.
Thus, at the moment only 31 cases remain active, of which 24 of them are hospitalized (five in the ICU) and the remaining seven are at home, given that they present mild symptoms, with medical control of the home units (UVAC).
In addition, the Health Area of Ibiza and Formentera highlight that no case has been diagnosed on the last 24 hrs and already 15 days “without regretting deaths in Ibiza”. In addition, they emphasize that in the last eleven days no new infections have been detected among healthcare personnel: there are currently two professionals with confirmed Covid-19.
On the other hand, in Formentera they continue to adapt to the opening and as a way to raise awareness among residents, the Consell de Formentera has launched the campaign ‘Move on a bike’ on social networks. According to the official statement, “The bicycle is an ideal transport to guarantee social distancing in this de-escalation process that we have just started, it is also sustainable and adapts to the territorial characteristics of the island”. The beach kiosks of Formentera await their protocol to be able to open with ease, complying with all the requirements of the health authorities and thus guaranteeing its clients the maximum security.
The tourism sector is optimistic about the news that the company Alitalia has started to schedule its direct flights with the island of Ibiza from 4/7. On the other hand, the Ryanair company continues with its scheduled flights also in June pending the development of the pandemic during that month. Alitalia follows the rhythm of other airlines that already allow buying tickets to Ibiza from Germany, such as Eurowings, in addition to a dozen low-cost flights that already have scheduled flights to Ibiza this summer.
7 May – 2020
The spokesman for the Committee for the Management of Infectious Diseases of the Balearic Islands, Dr. Javier Arranz, said yesterday that the transmission of the coronavirus in Ibiza and Formentera is controlled. “There is controlled transmission at the moment that we are having very few cases,” said Arranz yesterday, who also recalled that in Ibiza the level of infections is lower than in Mallorca, “especially in recent weeks.” He added that “if there are no cases coming out when more tests are being done, it is a good indicator that there are no undiagnosed people. The situation is good to progress in phases, the de-escalation ».
At the moment the situation in Ibiza and Formentera remains the same as yesterday, with 35 confirmed patients among those hospitalized and those with mild symptoms and receiving home care.
In addition, the Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) considers it unlikely that contact with water from swimming pools or beaches is contagious, although it warns that these activities generally involve “a loss of the recommended measures of social distancing”, they consider that it is “very unlikely “to become infected with the virus from contact with water during regular recreational activities in swimming pools or beaches. In the beach sand, the combined action of salt, solar radiation and temperature, is favorable for the inactivation of pathogens.
These conclusions are collected in a study carried out by the CSIC on the transmission of the new coronavirus in beaches and swimming pools, a report in which researchers from six scientific centers have participated.
On the other hand, according to the international press specialized in tourism, some countries are already starting to activate the process of opening up to international tourism, among others is Egypt, which aims to open borders in June and which are beginning to design protocol plans in airports and accommodation. According to experts, the Balearic Islands and to a greater extent Formentera and Menorca are presented as ideal destinations for both a national and international audience as an alternative to destinations further away from Europe such as Thailand or the Caribbean islands, and also because they have demonstrated to be very safe places that have had a low incidence of the disease. The two islands have a good selection of private villas that may be the best option for those who prefer to get away from the crowds and not give up on a well-deserved vacation.
6 May – 2020
Ibiza has added today a positive case with mild symptoms in the last 24 hours, this person will be followed by the home care units. Therefore, the number of active cases in the islands increases to 35.
In total there are 27 hospitalized in Ibiza and Formentera while there are eight people at home with mild symptoms, seven in Ibiza and one in Formentera. Another positive fact is that it’s already 9 consecutive days without infection between health professionals.
Meanwhile, the residents of Formentera adapt without problems and keeping the recommendations and precautions to the new state of opening setting an example of civic behavior in front of this health crisis.
On the other hand, according to the press specialized in the tourism sector, experts from the Oxford-Man Institute and the Paris-Dauphine University suggest that the smart resumption of tourism flows could be the solution to revive a particularly punished tourism industry. These experts propose to increase the unconfinement plans by regions (implemented at the national level by countries such as Spain and France) to the entire European territory.
Its approach is that, as the incidence of the virus decreases, mobility between regions gradually normalizes “following a green area strategy.” The idea is simple: to allow the mobility of people between “green areas” of different European countries through a network of regions certified by community institutions.
To take this step, it would be necessary to label each region with the color red (if the virus is not controlled) or green (if it is under control), in order to avoid the spread of the virus through the territory and to be able to restart the activity as soon as possible. According to the authors, it is extremely important that the indicators that determine whether an area is green or red are reliable. For this reason, both these indicators and the sanitary measures and mobility restrictions implied by these labels, “must be defined by the competent health authorities,” they emphasize.
The authors of the report stress that “allowing pan-European tourism in the summer months is probably the most important determining factor for the economic survival of several European countries.” “In addition to benefits for the tourism sector, the recovery could also be accelerated, for example, in the leisure and transport sectors,” they add.
At the same time, Germany is optimistic about the advance of pandemic control:
Germany’s federal tourism commissioner Thomas Bareiss told the Der Tagesspiegel newspaper on Tuesday that if the coronavirus outbreak is kept under control “people will be able to go abroad on vacation soon.” In fact, Germany is already in talks with other governments to plan the conditions under which German citizens can move to their preferred destinations (Spain, Italy and Greece) this summer. The most optimistic even believe that there will be German tourists in Spain from the second half of June.
The German government sees possible air travel even before a coronavirus vaccine is available. TUI, the world’s leading tour operator, also proposes that its clients start traveling to Spain from the second half of June, especially the Germans, whose government has been one of the most efficient in controlling the pandemic.
Along the same lines, Luis Riu, CEO of Riu Hotels, expressed himself, stating that June may be the beginning of the tourist recovery. Riu is convinced that the Balearic and Canary Islands will be the first destinations with national and international flights.
From now on, it is necessary to specify what sanitary measures must be agreed in the European Union so that citizens can fly, although some airlines have begun to operate, forcing passengers to use masks, among other measures.
In addition to the use of face masks, IATA proposes the implementation of additional measures such as passenger temperature control, limitation of movement within aircraft and increased cleaning and disinfection, among others.
In addition, he insists that the risk of contagion in aircraft is minimal, even without the adoption of special measures. IATA argues that there are several reasons for this low level of contagion on board aircraft. He cites, among others, that the high-efficiency particulate air filters of modern aircraft clean the air “with the same quality as a hospital operating room.”
5 May – 2020
Ibiza adds a new infected of coronavirus and stands at 34 active cases, according to data from the last 24 hours provided by Ib-Salut, so 34 confirmed infected patients remain active. The healing percentage stands at almost 72% and the total number of deaths on the islands of Ibiza and Formentera as a result of Covid-19 is 12 people.
Ib-Salut highlights that it has been eight days without finding infected among health personnel after the screening test done on more than 800 people who work in the health sector of the islands. The positive infected registered in the last 24 hours does not correspond to any of the travelers who yesterday could not board the first morning ferry to Formentera for testing positive for the fast antibody test. In these cases, Ib-Salut has performed a PCR test whose results will be known after 48 hours, according to the sources consulted.
Residents in Formentera are back to their daily habits despite the fact that there are no tourists on the island and the hotels remain closed waiting for Ibiza’s airport opening. The few businessmen who have opened their establishments are optimistic and also the residents who can move freely, without space or time limitations within the island, enjoying the first meeting on the terraces of the few bars open in Sant Francesc.
Most feel optimistic, in July some hotel establishments may open, villas and other types of private accommodation could be activated much earlier, depending on the opening of the Ibiza airport.
Meanwhile, the island’s inhabitants enjoy its paradisiacal beaches thanks to the high temperatures that already allow bathing in the sea, logically maintaining the safety distances imposed by the government health authorities.

The spokesman for the pandemic in the Balearic Islands, the Dr Javier Arranz, assures that the islands are “closer” to meeting the criteria set by the OMS to initiate the opening of the general lock-down.
On the other hand, we want to point out the article in the Spanish press that highlights that the cure for the coronavirus could be in the sea of Ibiza.
A Spanish pharmacist is waiting for the Spanish Medicines Agency to give them permission to test a drug whose molecule comes from a marine mollusk of Ibiza’s waters.
Spanish pharmacist PharmaMar is waiting for the Spanish Medicines Agency to approve the human clinical trial of the drug Aplidin, an antitumor used against multiple myeloma, a type of cancer of the bone marrow.
This powerful antiviral has been shown to be very efficient against this type of cancer and has been tested in a laboratory against Covid-19 with very encouraging results. Thus, if the Spanish Medicines Agency approved the phase II clinical trial, Aplidin would begin to be tested in patients with coronavirus in three hospitals in Madrid

Mr. Arranz explained that the most seriously ill patients can be in the ICU between 20 and 30 days, so even weeks after the curve is going down, “unfortunately, deaths will have to be added to the list.”
Meanwhile, he added, there are “open roads” for the constant arrival of protective material on the islands.
Every week between 15 and 17 tons of diverse material will arrive », part of this material is already reaching the Ibiza and Formentera”.
