Save Posidonia Project Formentera

The Consell Insular de Formentera (Balearic Islands) started the Save Posidonia Project to promote a new kind of sustainable tourism and do something real to protect the marine ecosystem in the western Mediterranean Sea.

The goal of the project is to get people to care about and donate money only for the protection and conservation of Posidonia oceanica, a type of seagrass that is very important for the health of our seas.

The Posidonia meadows around Formentera cover more than 7,600 hectares and are one of the largest and best-preserved underwater ecosystems in the Mediterranean.
They are very important for making oxygen, cleaning water, and protecting the coast, and they are home to many marine species. But these meadows are becoming more and more at risk from human activity and climate change, so it is more important than ever to protect them.

Individuals, businesses, and groups can all get involved in the Save Posidonia Project by sponsoring square meters or hectares of Posidonia. This directly helps protect this priceless natural heritage for the long term. Each sponsorship helps pay for research, environmental monitoring, education programs, and campaigns to raise awareness about the need to protect Formentera’s marine environment for the long term.

Also, all the events that happen on the island throughout the year work with the project by giving a part of their profits to it. This makes the project a group effort that includes residents, visitors, and local businesses.

By backing the Save Posidonia Project, you are helping to protect one of the world’s most amazing marine treasures. This will keep the clear waters of Formentera a symbol of purity, balance, and life for many years to come.
