Electric cars are no longer free on the Ibiza – Formentera ferry: what you need to know before you leave
For years, one of the most appreciated pieces of news by those who travel sustainably to Formentera has been this: taking your 100% electric vehicle on the ferry from Ibiza cost nothing. No extra charge, no additional fee. A benefit that the shipping companies had introduced as a concrete sign of their commitment to green mobility.
But be careful: things have changed, and they have done so for all the companies operating on the route.
Baleària: reduced free access only for motorcycles and scooters
According to the most up-to-date information available on the official Baleària help center, the free passage for 100% electric vehicles on the Ibiza – Formentera route now applies exclusively to scooters and electric motorcycles. Electric cars are no longer included in this promotion and are subject to the normal boarding fee at the time of booking.
Still in 2025, the Baleària promotion included cars, vans under 4.5 metres, and other battery-powered vehicles. Today that window has narrowed significantly.
Trasmapi: end of free access from March 18, 2026
Trasmapi, the other main company operating on the Ibiza – Formentera route, has also ended free boarding for electric vehicles. Starting from March 18, 2026, 100% electric vehicles are no longer boarded for free and are subject to the standard rates applicable to any other vehicle.
A decision that officially marks the end of an era for those who hoped to reach Formentera with zero impact — even in terms of ferry costs.
What remains free?
According to Baleària’s current policy, 100% electric scooters and motorcycles continue to travel for free to Formentera, both from Ibiza and Dénia. The fundamental condition remains: the vehicle must be fully electric, without a combustion engine. Hybrid and plug-in vehicles have never benefited from this incentive and continue to pay the standard rate.
What does it mean for those travelling with an electric car?
If you are planning to take your electric car to Formentera this summer, keep in mind the boarding cost as you would for any other car. Average prices for a vehicle on the Ibiza – Formentera ferry are around €49 for the vehicle alone, to which the passenger ticket is added.
Also consider that during the summer season, from June to September, Formentera applies restrictions on vehicle access. It is necessary to check the conditions on formentera.eco and obtain the required permit before boarding.
A smarter alternative
A good option is to leave the car in Ibiza and explore the island by bicycle, rented electric scooter, or local public transport. Formentera is small and flat — it is one of the best places in the world to discover on two wheels.
Always check before you leave
The advice from yourformentera.es is always the same: check the official websites of Baleària and Trasmapi before booking, and do not assume that promotional conditions you read about in the past are still valid. Rates and commercial policies change, and planning with updated information is the best way to avoid surprises at the time of boarding.
