Formentera Looks to the Sky 2026: Discover the Night Sky Show

Astronomy holds a special place in the natural heritage of Formentera. This summer and autumn, the island opens its doors once again to one of its greatest treasures: an exceptional quality night sky, which can now be explored thanks to the new edition of Formentera Mira al Cel 2026.

A Sky Recognized Internationally

Since 2023, Formentera has held the distinction of Starlight Tourist Destination, an international certification that confirms the excellence of its skies for astronomical observation. This recognition is more than symbolic: it represents the island’s commitment to a sustainable tourism model, tied to nature and to the preservation of a resource increasingly rare in the modern world.
The program, promoted by the Consell and developed by the Associació Astronòmica de Formentera, transforms this distinction into accessible experiences for everyone. The activities are completely free and open to the public, combining telescope observations, informative talks, and sessions carefully adapted to the astronomical conditions of each season.

The Stellar Calendar for 2026

June and July: Deep Space Wonders

The season kicks off on June 12 with an observation dedicated to deep space. You will observe some of the most fascinating galaxies visible from our latitude: the Whirlpool Galaxy, the Bode Galaxy, and the Pinwheel Galaxy, along with the spectacular Hercules Cluster.
July 10 marks one of the best nights to see the Milky Way cross the Summer Triangle. This session features an interactive talk with projections and the chance to observe some of the most iconic nebulae in the sky: the Eagle Nebula, the Lagoon Nebula, and the legendary Pillars of Creation—those cosmic monuments that mark the birth of new stars.

August: Eclipse and Meteor Showers

August brings one of the year’s most anticipated events: on August 12, a solar eclipse aligns with the Perseids, the meteor shower that illuminates summer skies. The session will combine viewing this celestial phenomenon with exploring deep space objects.

September and October: Autumn Galaxies

As autumn arrives, September and October focus again on the galaxies and nebulae visible at summer’s end. The Andromeda Galaxy will be one of the highlights, among the most beautiful in the night sky. Toward the season’s close, Saturn will also be observable in excellent conditions.

Moon Special Sessions

Beyond the main calendar, the program includes four dedicated sessions for lunar observation on June 21, July 21, August 21, and September 21. These dates offer excellent opportunities to explore the Moon’s details through telescopes and for astronomical photography—perfect for those who want to capture lunar beauty.

Experiences Adapted to Real Conditions

The organization emphasizes that each observation’s content will adapt based on meteorological conditions and sky visibility. This flexibility ensures that regardless of the night’s conditions, participants always enjoy the best possible experience.

A Reference Destination for Astro-Tourism

With this initiative, Formentera continues to establish itself as an essential destination for astronomical tourism and for everyone who wishes to rediscover the cosmos. In an era when light pollution has darkened the skies of most places worldwide, Formentera’s ability to offer a clear window to the universe is a privilege that deserves to be celebrated and shared.
Whether you come as an amateur astronomer or simply as someone who wants to reconnect with the night sky, Formentera Mira al Cel 2026 invites you to look up and discover one of the island’s greatest natural heritages.
